VBC 400: Cross Cultural Study for Social Changes: the US and South Korea

Study abroad programs give Ball State students an opportunity to explore outside the classroom and around the world. Many of our study abroad programs are led by BSU faculty members-- they develop high-impact courses to be taught internationally, perhaps for a summer session, a full semester, or even a quick trip during winter or spring break. This year over 250 BSU students will participate in a BSU faculty-led study abroad program! Gifts to the Study Abroad Fund will help support projects like VBC: Cross-cultural Study Abroad for Social Change (US & South Korea), Black Global Studies in Belize, Travel Writing in France & Italy, Ecology in Namibia, and Leadership in Ireland, just to name a few.

About VBC: Cross-cultural Study Abroad for Social Change (US & South Korea):

Our group of 14 BSU students will travel to Seoul, Korea in May to study culture as it relates to social change. One of the things we're most excited to do is the culturally Immersive and pedagogically collaborative learning opportunity between the Ball State University students and a partner institution, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Korea. While we're there, we'll witness how a city on the opposite side of the Earth is facing very similar urban social and environmental issues that the US cities are also facing, and will also learn how its members of society address, approach, and resolve them in very similar and/or unique ways to achieve the same goals and objectives. Students will also be challenged to apply what they learned through the collaborative learning opportunity to understand their own society’s issues. This course is led by Dr. Sanglim Yoo from the Department of Urban Planning, E. Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning.

Testimonials from former student participants:
" It is an incredible once-in-lifetime experience to explore the Urban Landscapes that compose the City of Seoul. The ability to learn from others internationally to impact locally truly speaks volumes to the value of the trip and the lessons it provided. " - Ivan Mota-Sanchez, BArch '24

"Going on the CAP Korea trip was the best decision I made during my time at Ball State. It was an incredibly an eye-opening and cultural experience that broadened my perspective and sharpened my skills as a planner. Not only that, I’m grateful to have made memories with an amazing group of students and professors that will last me a lifetime, and I would go to Korea a thousand times again if I could" - Enzo Lundy, BUPD '22

"CAP Korea was one of my top favorite memories at Ball State and the most valuable learning experience I had in CAP. The best way to learn about cities is to experience them. I appreciated the unique and insightful opportunities we had to talk with Korean professionals specifically about urban planning and design topics, in addition to cultural immersion activities." - Grayson Cates, BUPD '23

"Getting the opportunity to experience a culture different than my own, through the lens of design, is something that will stick with me for years to come. CAP Korea has widened my perspective on design and I would recommend it to anyone who wants more perspective on life and design." -Ben Bischoff, BArch '24

"Having the opportunity to attend CAP Korea through funding from the CAP travel fund allowed me to experience an opportunity of a lifetime. Cap Korea 2023 was a great experience that allowed me to gain new perspectives and grow as an architecture student. Plus, one would never forget the incredible architecture and history." -Sierra Ivy, BArch '24

"Studying abroad in South Korea was an extraordinary adventure that not only broadened my academic horizons but also transformed my perspective on life. Immersing myself in the rich Korean culture, forging lifelong friendships, and navigating the vibrant cityscape left an indelible mark, reshaping my worldview and fostering personal growth in ways I could have never imagined." -Clarissa Carrigan, BUPD' 24
