For nearly 50 years, the Department of Elementary Education at Ball State has provided the opportunity for teacher candidates to experience the UK as they live, learn, and teach abroad. This summer's six-week program will take place in London where students will have the opportunity to work with children from various economic, racial, social, and linguistic backgrounds, build relationships, practice instructional and assessment strategies, and connect contextual factors (local, historical, social) to teaching as they participate in over 60 hours of internship in London primary schools.
This immersive, experiential learning opportunity emphasizes contextual knowledge and the critical ways it shapes education. Participants will explore how they experience the world as cultural beings and how this informs the lens through which they make sense of the world. To become effective teachers, it is essential that students understand the very important roles that culture and context play in their own and in children’s lives and incorporate this knowledge into their pedagogical practice.Forest School Experience at Keele University, EDEL-O 2019
Because these experiences support future teachers to understand the impact of culture and context on pedagogical practice, which is critical for the development of culturally responsive teachers, we are raising funds to ensure that any student who wants to participate in this opportunity is able to do so, regardless of their financial situation.
