We are excited to offer two months of Summer Learning Fun at Camp Adventure for 2021 for approximately 150 children! Our community children will be provided high quality science, literacy, and STEM instruction as well as participate in archery, fishing, culinary classes, financial literacy classes, the arts, and MORE!

Thank you for all of your support!

We are so close to our stretch goal with only a few weeks remaining in our campaign. We appreciate any level of donation. All gifts are tax-deductible. These additional funds will assist us in providing high-quality and unique experiences for our campers.

We have a new stretch goal of $7,000!!!

These additional funds will continue to help children attend camp without cost and provide high quality, engaging projects and materials!

Summer Learning Fun at Camp Adventure (SLFCA) is an immersive project that involves a partnership between Ball State University, Muncie Community Schools, and Delaware County school-aged children and families that began in 2017. The general purpose of this program is to assist in combating detrimental academic and health losses experienced by children during the summer months while providing BSU teacher education majors with real world leadership and instructional opportunities.

The month-long summer program concentrates on creating academically-successful, emotionally-strong, healthy individuals who approach the world with curiosity, creativity, and empathy in order to become future leaders. We strive to achieve this through providing a safe, structured, active environment; with well-balanced meals; and high-quality academic instruction. The camp takes place at Camp Adventure, which is owned by the Muncie Optimist Club, operated and maintained by Muncie Community Schools, and has been a part of the community since 1939.

One unique feature of this project is the utilization of both campus and community resources. Ball State teacher education candidates spend the month of May on campus training to become culturally responsive and inquiry-based teachers. They create cross-curricular science lessons plans applying the 5E Learning Model and then implement these lesson plans with campers during the four weeks at Camp Adventure. Veteran teachers from Wes-Del, Burris, and Muncie Schools act as both mentors and role models supporting the learning of the campers and the professional growth of our BSU teacher candidates.

Children receive IN standards-based instruction in science, literacy, and math as well as activities focused on social-emotional learning and relationship building. Additionally, children participate in archery, low ropes courses, fishing, wagon rides, nature hikes, cardiovascular activities, and field trips.

Summer Learning Fun is able to give children both a distinctive and exceptional learning experience in contrast to typical, high-cost summer camps that focus more on childcare rather than education.
